A Part of Saddlebred History

American Saddlebreds have been a part of the Shiflet family since the early 1940's when Claude Shiflet (Matt’s grandfather) purchased his first Saddlebred. Claude began training horses at a young age and eventually in 1970, he opened his own public training operation, Claude Shiflet Stables in Asheboro, NC.

Claude's love for the breed was passed onto his son, Harrison. Naturally, having grown up around Saddlebreds, Harrison's affinity for the breed started to grow as well. Hall of Fame horse trainer, Claude and Harrison worked side by side for many years at the Asheboro location. Matt is now the third generation of Shiflet horsemen to operate out of the stables in Asheboro, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. The fourth generation of Shiflet horsemen, Matt and Whitney's son Clayton started showing saddlebreds in 2023, continuing the legacy.

As the Shiflet family spread out across North Carolina, Matt also moved around a bit but held on tight to his family's roots in Asheboro. Throughout the years, Matt has trained national and world champion horses. Matt’s lifelong passion for the breed has helped create the highly successful training, breeding and showing operation that thrives today.

The family's legacy continues. The historic and formerly known as Claude Shiflet Stables, still stands today and is now known as Matt Shiflet Stables.
